Israel’s Ministry of Defense announced the successful testing of an upgraded version of the Iron Dome air defense system.

“The Israel Missile Defense Organization in the MOD and Rafael have completed a successful series of flight tests of a new and upgraded version of the Iron Dome. The test simulated advanced threats which it may face during times of conflict – whether on land or in the sea”, the Israel Ministry of Defense said in a tweet.

The upgraded version of the Iron Dome air defense system created to intercept short-range missiles with more accuracy.

“The new and the upgraded version of the Iron Dome is expected to be delivered to the IAF for operational use. It will also be integrated and installed on the Navy’s Sa’ar 6 corvettes and will be central to the defense of Israel’s economic waters (EEZ).”

What is the Iron Dome defense system?

Iron Dome air defense system is a mobile-based all-weather air defense system. It is developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries.

Does Iron Dome really work?

Iron Dome is a short-range air defense system. It is designed to intercept short-range rockets and artillery shells up to 70 km away.

According to the Israeli Defense Officials, the Iron Dome’s success rate is between 87-90%. Which is considered as the extremely high level above that usually expected for air defense systems.

The updated Iron Dome air defense system:

The successful testing of the new system took place in central Israel in the presence of Israeli Navy and Air Force officials. During the testing, several scenarios replicating possible missile threats were simulated to test Iron Dome’s upgraded interception capabilities.

How many countries have the Iron Dome defense system?

Recently Israel allows the USA to deploy the Iron Dome air defense system in its military bases in the Persian Gulf and far east.

Other than the USA, Singapore is also using this air defense system.

Effectiveness of upgraded system:

“We have completed a series of tests with a success rate of 100%”, Rafael’s Vice President Pini Yungman said in a statement. “The system intercepted all threats, which were simulated in an area secured for the purpose of the experiment.
